Mick Schumacher was a well-known prospect for many teams in Formula 1 during his F2 career where in his second season he had won a championship with Prema following in his father’s footsteps of becoming a champion. Later that season Mick would intern or feel an experience of an F1 weekend with both Haas and Alfa Romeo where he would see what it is like to become a F1 driver. With both Haas and Alfa Romeo resetting their driver lineup for next season Mick was a big contender and was ahead of everyone and it relied on him who to choose.
Mick would decide to join Haas during the 2021 F1 season. Reporters could argue that the Haas car that year was one of the worst if not the worst as it would be a disastrous season where no points were scored and both Mick and Nikita had multiple bad outings. After the Russia-Ukraine war had broken out their main sponsor Urakali was sacked as well as the driver Nikita Mazepin. Haas would then go on to sign Kevin Magnussen who was a much more experienced driver than Mick and would show that in the first half of the season with multiple point scores while Mick had many terrible outings leading to the question will his contract be renewed the next season?
The next half of the season would prove that Mick has the potential to be special, just like his dad. During the British Grand Prix, Mick Schumacher would earn his first F1 points after coming from P16 to finish P8 and had an astonishing fight with then, 2 time world champion Max Verstappen. The form would continue onto the next race where he would finish in the points again being P6 and overtaking his teammate and 7 time world champion Lewis Hamilton. This shows the high calibre of racing Mick could have in a low-end race car. But the rest of the season Haas had started to regress to the back, and the car hadn’t been performing well for both Mick and Kevin eventually leading to Mick getting told Haas wasn’t going to renew his contract in a hotel lobby.
One thing was for certain: Mick wasn’t going to give up on F1 that easily. Toto Wolff had been admiring Mick as he was the son of Michael who helped Mercedes massively and saw Potential from Mick, leading to him signing a Mercedes reserve driver role. He was able to get a reserved seat and made vital inroads for the W13, as it wasn’t performing as well. One honourable mention should be his late-night work in the simulator during the Spanish GP that led both Lewis Hamilton and George Russel to get podiums, after the race Lewis and George would thank Mick for the amazing developments he did for the podium. Mick would continue on till the end of the season when he had a chance to race Hypercars in the World Endurance Championship for Alpine.
The first race of the WEC championship was 2 weeks ago where Mick and his team finished 13th. During the off-season big news hit Mercedes as their 7 time world champion was leaving the team and joining rivals Ferrari, leaving an open seat at Mercedes. His uncle Ralf Schumacher said, “I think Mick’s chances are good and I think he deserves the chance. Alongside Russell, he would be a man to build up for the future. I’m pretty confident about that, now Toto Wolff just has to be of the same opinion.”
This has hinted to most F1 fans that Mercedes may want to promote such a young driver like Mick to the Lewis role and want to build him to become a successful driver like his Father. Even more so Mick could be the main running candidate in this race for this seat as the market for drivers is very slim therefore leading to a chance for Mick to grab his opportunity and join the historical team Mercedes.
